The Atom Improv: Free Improv Taster!

The latest exciting venture in our great city is The Atom Improv. What sets The Atom Improv apart is its exclusive focus on the renowned UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade) "game of the scene" style of improv. We caught up with the group's founder, Al Donohoe, to tell us a little more about it. He told us:

“Our classes build towards a complex yet rewarding long-form format known as “The Harold.” The Harold requires discipline, timing, and a deep understanding of comedic patterns. We work on connection, trust, and spontaneity. Above all, though, you will laugh your head off. Improv is fun!”

Al went on to say:

“Our aim is to help build and expand the improv scene in Liverpool with a view to having multiple teams performing across the city regularly. The goal is to offer alternative voices to the Liverpool comedy scene and solidify our place on the U.K. improv map. In December, we will be looking for performers to participate in Atom shows, and although auditions will be open to all, a clear understanding of “Game” and specifically “The Harold” will be preferred. We cover all the essentials in our classes.”

Having studied Improv in my own training as an actor, I can say without a doubt that it is an essential skill for an actor to have, and not only that, you also have the prospect of being involved in future shows too! These classes look like an amazing opportunity for all creatives out there!

So, a little more about The Atom Improv's illustrious founder:

Al Donohoe started improvising in 2016. After performing with multiple teams in Liverpool, he then traveled to LA in 2019 to train with the prestigious UCB improv theatre founded by Amy Poehler. He has since expanded his learning online and trained with The Free Association and WGIS, both online and in person. Al's commitment to the art of improvisation led him to establish The Atom Improv after the pandemic, offering a unique platform for aspiring improvisers to learn and grow. Al works as an actor and teaches improvisation and Live at LMA.

As you can see, Al has a wealth of experience. To whet your appetite, The Atom Improv is running a free workshop on Friday, August 18th, from 7-8 PM at Our Space on Rodney Street. This workshop will give people a taste of the kind of improv they do and their approach to teaching. Additionally, a longer 5-week introduction to Long Form will start on Tuesday, August 22nd.
