With seven larger than life characters multi-rolled by three actors this new play looks upon an important message on men’s physical health, encouraging men to look out for the signs on their down belows, in an attempt to dispel the taboo subject on men’s genital health issues. Don’t worry there is no nudity in this show!

Tom Cain is a Theatre Writer, Director, and Producer from Southport, and the owner of the self-funded theatre company, TomCainTheatre.

His show highlights include the critically acclaimed 97+, a theatrical drama based on the Hillsborough Disaster. This production earned two Five Star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe, a 10/10 Perfect review from the Liverpool Theatre Festival, and most recently, a sold-out performance at the Liverpool Olympia Theatre. The show also featured on BBC News North West Tonight.

In addition to his work with TomCainTheatre, Tom has an extensive freelance theatre career. He directed the new National Theatre play Replica as part of National Theatre Connections for Imaginarium Theatre, which sold out at both Shakespeare North Playhouse and Manchester HOME. He also works as a theatre practitioner for Ariel Trust Teaching Agency, where he teaches violence reduction workshops in primary schools across Merseyside. Using theatre tools such as improvisation and freeze frames, he addresses serious topics including anti-bullying, radicalisation, grooming, and online safety.

Tom says, I first came up with the idea for A Man and His Circumstance when studying Drama at Edge Hill University where I graduated in 2021 with a First Class BA Hons Degree in Drama. It was in my Uni Accommodation where my housemate told me that her and her female friend had a conversation about the health of their female body parts. This stemmed from one of them worrying about themselves but was rest assured after having a conversation with their closed friend in comparison they  then knew this was normal. When my housemate asked if lads have the same sort of conversations I laughed at the possible idea of it.

He added, I went to an all boys high school where being seen as tough and popular was the most important things so nobody would dare try and talk and compare about the health of their male body parts incase they then got the piss taken out of them. Now as we have matured with age, I know this is no longer the case with my friendship group but it is still prevalent in others which is ridiculous that lads behave like this.

So I wanted to create A Man and His Circumstance which looks upon a range of male physical health topics with a total of seven characters including two over the top, chavvy, laddy gang characters for audiences to laugh at how pathetic they are but then also conveys the message to encourage men to open up and talk to their friends if they are anxious about their health.

Additionally, if you work with or know of a company that provides support for men who have had or are due to have any physical health condition or operation, please encourage them to get in touch via social media or email at tomcaintheatre@gmail.com.

Collaboration would be greatly appreciated, as it would allow audiences to take away informational pamphlets and be aware of the support available to them.
