Inside The Wire: The Moon Isn’t Everything

Working on Grin Theatre’s new play The Moon Isn’t Everything has been an incredibly moving and poignant time for me as the writer and director of this piece. This short play hopefully packs an incredible punch in its betrayal of mental health, the value of just listening to someone and the abuse that one person can inflict upon another. It’s not an easy play but then it’s not an easy subject. As a writer I spent months documenting real life sources to make the play as realistic and as valuable as possible and it truly has been a labour of love from conception to rehearsal to eventual performance over two nights at Studio 3 at Hope Street.

The cast are amazing. They have been truly inspiring throughout the course of the rehearsals and here at Grin Theatre, we have really loved working with them. Throughout the entire process I have valued their collaborative creativity to help me map out the details of Sam’s young life and shine a light on the people who were closest to him.

Mental health issues are so important in every community in our society but particularly so in the LGBTQ+  community and I wanted the play to reflect on its relevance and importance within our community. To be kind and listen is a strong starting point and I hope this play reflects those two simple factors in Sam’s story.

Along with the show, we are thrilled to say that local singer/songwriter Nicola Hardman will be performing a specially composed piece of music for the overture and after the play itself will present a short showcase of her excellent catalogue of music.

Grin Theatre has now been a part of the Liverpool’s LGBTQ+ community for nearly 16 years and we keep on getting stronger as our voices are heard. It has been my pleasure to work with so many brilliant creative people during my time with Grin Theatre, always thrilling, always such a positive experience and always true to its spirit as a leading LGBT fringe theatre company. Here’s to another 16 years !!!!
