What's On: Triple Threat

A Triple Threat- Regan Kelly

Coming to the Hope Street Theatre this summer is A Triple Threat, a play focusing on self-confidence, overcoming fear and embracing renewal wrapped in the velvety curtain that is the performing arts. A Triple Threat finds three players, though very different, are brought together through performance.

Written and Directed by Regan Kelly, the show harkens on his own experience within the industry and pulls influence from his observations and relatability. From training at the Royal Shakespeare Company to performing in Moore Theatre, The Last Christmas, Kelly’s experiences range from the studio to the stage and aim to tell a tale of the performing profession through many lenses and perspectives.

With characters ranging in age and job title, the show aims to investigate the intricacies of a play and its players. Focusing on three actors, Adam, Amy and Lionel, the show will hone in on their craft and the stages of their individual careers.

Lionel, to be played by Leo Tovey, ‘embodies the classic gentleman’. Signifying the actor who has passed his prime, Lionel relishes in his former 1970s glory and wishes to take the stage by storm once more. Fighting against the younger generation in the casting room, he lands his next role but has a lot to learn from his younger castmates.

Amy, yet to be cast, is a second-year university student who is passionate about performance, yet lacks in confidence and self-assurance. She is a talented performer in acting and singing but is not fully comfortable with her dancing abilities. Her shy and nervous nature prevents her from being the performer she wants and knows she can be. Amy’s self-esteem and confidence will not be self-actualised until she overcomes her fears and shyness.

Adam, yet to be cast, is arrogance personified. Freshly graduated from a performing arts institute, Adam is a quick-witted and sharped tongue young man who puts his art before his friendships. Eager to climb the ladder of success Adam will quickly pull down anyone who will get in his way. Although his demeanour and determination say otherwise, Adam’s spoiled nature makes him quick to quit anything that does not go his way. Adam needs to grow in his maturity and resist isolating himself from his castmates to succeed.

With influences from Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and John Osbourne’s The Entertainer, A Triple Threat will show a story of determination and resilience. With auditions being held soon, this show is one for the diary!
