Plug-In: Thrill Of Love

In an era marked by sensational headlines, one story gripped the nation like no other: the tale of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. Now, her story is being brought to life in a gripping play that goes beyond the headlines to explore the woman behind the sensationalism and the tragic events that led to her crime.

Twisted Nerve Theatre Presents: The Thrill of Love by Amanda Whittington

This compelling production, directed by the visionary Elaine Stewart, offers a fresh perspective on Ruth Ellis's life, drawing the audience into the heart of the 1950s. Set in a cabaret-style venue, "Twisted Nerve" transforms a night at the theatre into an immersive journey through time. From the moment you step inside, you are transported back to the halcyon days of the '50s, where you can pull up a chair, soak in the atmosphere, and even enjoy the signature cocktail, "The Femme Fatale."

Elaine Stewart shares her enduring fascination with Ruth Ellis's complex case: "What drove her to murder? Why didn’t she offer a defence? Why wasn’t she reprieved like most women in the 20th century? These questions inspired me to place the audience right in the midst of that era." Her vision is to immerse the audience in a film noir-style experience, blending vibrant '50s music with earthy blues, capturing the essence of the time.

The only significant challenge Elaine faced was casting due to the overwhelming talent at the auditions. "I was looking for women who could portray both strength and vulnerability, and for the male role, someone with authority and compassion. I believe we have found the perfect cast who have fully embraced their roles."

"The script captured my imagination immediately," Elaine enthuses. "It’s well-written, with depth, subtle comedic moments, and an unusual structure where scenes merge seamlessly. It powerfully portrays Ruth’s life, focusing on the relationships between the female characters, highlighting their vulnerability and strength."

Elaine is dedicated to portraying Ruth Ellis authentically. "She was very much a victim of her times. Domestic abuse, drugs, and alcohol played significant roles in her life. In today’s society, the outcome would have been different. She was a hostess, mother, and murderess who loved, drank and lived too much. But did she really deserve to die?"

John O’Gorman (Jack Gale) "Being part of a story that gives a true insight into Ruth Ellis's life and mindset, showing how a different verdict might have been reached today, is fascinating."

Frances Broudie Oldridge (Sylvia Shaw) "We are inhabiting characters who changed history, making the world a safer place."

Christine Corser (Ruth Ellis) "Ruth’s life and crime have so many layers. It’s truly compelling and historically significant."

Madeline Lloyd-Jones (Vickie Martin) "I’m proud to be part of a show that immerses the audience in the lives behind the headlines, giving these brilliant, complex characters the recognition and compassion they deserve."

Sarah Jones (Doris Judd) "I’m excited to tell the story of Ruth and her contemporaries, highlighting the oppression and disregard women faced, and to consider how modern society would treat a woman in similar circumstances now."
